How are you at self-care? For me, I NEED to take at least a few moments every day to give myself some attention, tune in, listen and care for myself in whatever way feels right for the day. Some days it takes a few minutes, some days it can take much longer! What I’ve found over time however, is that there are a lot of people in my age group who really struggle with self-care and many others who don’t believe in it at all. Obviously I can’t and wouldn’t dictate what is “right” for anyone else but I know how much better I feel when I take this time for myself and I’d be happy to have a conversation regarding the benefits with any sceptics out there.
Luckily (something I didn’t think I’d say being unemployed during a global pandemic) I have LOTS of time on my hands so finding a moment or two to get in touch with myself is an easy thing. It’s just a matter of doing it and as with everything that can be the hardest part (best intentions, anyone?). Today for me; self-care took the shape of a home facial. Relaxing. Comforting. And oh so indulgent.
Just what is self-care?
Maybe you’re struggling with the question, “what is self-care and what does it mean for me?” And that’s TOTALLY reasonable. A few years back my therapist asked me what I was doing for self-care and I was dumbstruck. Sensing my loss for words, she then asked what I felt would be a good act of self-care for me. Crickets. I had no idea. So for the next few visits, this was a topic we explored and after some time and attention, I think I’m pretty good at performing acts of self-care and recognizing when I need them.
I highly recommend it!
So, if you are someone who struggles with coming up with ideas, here’s a website below I found with hundreds of possibilities. Literally. They’re divided into types of self-care; mental, spiritual, emotional etc. You don’t have subscribe to all of the ideas obviously but if it’s interesting to you, I bet you’ll stumble upon something that resonates with you and that’s a great start.
Take care of you!
